AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. AAC consists of all the different ways people can communicate, aside from using verbal speech. AAC is provided when verbal speech is not sufficient for communicating with those around them. There are high-tech, light-tech, and no-tech types of AAC. High-tech devices include touch, eye-gaze, and switch-activated computers and tablets, such as iPads and dedicated, medically-funded systems.

AAC is for anyone, but those who specifically benefit are those whose verbal speech is sometimes, often, or always insufficient for effective communication.

Research shows that providing alternative access to communication (AAC) has demonstrated increases in communication independence and efficiency. Research has also shown that introducing AAC facilitates language development as well as an increase in the verbal communication skills of those with emerging verbal skills. AAC is a successful addition to any child’s communication skills. AAC aids in overall improved communication efficiency.

Parent coaching is an integral part of my services and the most crucial element of AAC intervention. A child spends an average of one hour in therapy a week and the other 167 hours a week at home with their parents and communication partners. I want you to be their primary teachers in life! When everyone in the child’s immediate environment supports their language development with communication strategies, there’s no telling how far they will go!

Strengths-based: I utilize a strengths-based approach to intervention and not a deficits-focused approach. I utilize the strengths of your child to build on functional and meaningful skills and utilize the interests of your child to create an open door for communication and learning.
Family-centered: I collaborate with parents as part of every session in order to provide them with the tools they can use on a daily basis to support their child.
Child-led: I don’t follow a “compliance driven” or “sit down” model of therapy. Instead, I incorporate movement and follow the child’s lead in my time with them, utilizing the communication tools and strategies I have developed as a gateway to connecting and supporting them in their communication development.
